Arbutus Unedo – Strawberry Tree

Description

The strawberry tree (Arbutus unedo) is a 1.5-3 m high shrub or rarely a tree up to 12 m high with a matt grey, grooved trunk. The flowers grow in 5 cm long and broad, drooping clusters at the end of the branches and are greenish or white to pink in color. The strawberry tree blooms from October to March.

The fruits, up to 2 cm in size, have a hard, knobby skin. The fruit ripens from yellow to reddish-brown. The flesh is yellow in color and tastes sour and is not very aromatic.
