Description

The guava, Psidium guajava, is a plant in the myrtle family, Myrtaceae. It is a deeply branched, evergreen shrub or tree up to 10 m high with spreading branches, a trunk up to 25 cm wide and a reddish-brown, scaly bark.

The fruit is a rounded, oval, apple- or pear-shaped berry. The thin skin is green to yellow-green, often mottled pink, matt glossy, and waxy. The fruit is rich in vitamin C, ?-carotene and pectin. The flesh is fully ripe, soft, juicy, granular due to small stone cells, whitish, yellowish, yellow-green or pink in colour and often tinged red in the middle. The taste is pleasantly sweet and sour aromatic, similar to strawberry or pear.
