Description

Brugmansia is a genus of flowering plants in the family Solanaceae. The species in this genus used to be part of the genus Datura. They can be distinguished from this, among other things, by the fact that the flowers hang in brugmansias and not in daturas. However, there are cultivars of Brugmansia that are slightly protruding and do not hang so clearly. All species are highly poisonous.
The plants are native to South America, namely Peru and Chile. In the meantime, they are fairly widespread as an ornamental plant in Europe and North America. From the 7 original wild species, hundreds of different hybrids have now been bred for use in gardens. The genus is named after Sebald Justinus Brugmans.
