Description
Opuntia is a genus of cactus in the family Cactaceae. These cacti are called disc cactus or prick(s) cactus in Dutch. In the growing season, new discs are formed, which often feature rudimentary leaves.
Some varieties are grown for their edible prickly pears and the young discs used as vegetables. Because the cochineal aphid (Dactylopius coccus) occurs on the disc cactus, the disc cactus is also used for the production of dyes.
Most species are undemanding and are easy to keep on the windowsill, although some can grow very large.
Opuntia robusta has light to bright yellow flowers.
